This is a translation of a JPNIC document. JPNIC provides this
translation for convenience of those who can not read Japanese. But it
may contain mis-translations, and is by no means official. One should
consult the source document written in Japanese for detail.

JPNIC WHOIS service
Retrievable Information via WHOIS Service
JPNIC (Japan Network Information Center)is assigning JP domain names
ending with ".JP" and IP addresses used in Japan. And JPNIC collects
and opens network information obtained through the assignment. This
information is called "JPNIC database".
You can use JPNIC database to obtain information needed for your
network operations such as; I would like to look into the organization
that has "XXX" IP address. I need to confirm the domain name of
"ABC University". You can also use it daily network managements like
the matter that, "E-mails addressed to "XXX Company" could not be sent
and I got the error message. I would like to contact technical contacts
in the "XXX Company"..."
Currently Seven types of information are being maintained in the
JPNIC database as follows:
(Inside of parentheses indicates the type of whois command.)
1.Domain Information (DOM)
Contains information on: the name of the organization, postal address,
the name of the administrative contact/technical contact, DNS information,
and the IP address of a particular domain.
2.Network Information (NET)
Contains information on: the name of the organization, postal address,
the name of the administrative contact/technical contact, and DNS
information of a particular assigned IP address.
3.Personal Information (PERSON)
Contains information on: the E-mail address, home address, phone
number, fax number of a administrative contact/technical contact.
4.Host Information (HOST)
Contains information on: the IP address of the DNS server, technical
contact, the types of CPU/OS used.
5.Project Information (PROJ)
Contains information on: the name of administrative contact/technical
contact, NOCs, domain name, IP address of a network organization.
6.NOC Information (NOC)
Contains information on: the name of the technical contact of a NOC,
the IP networks connected to the NOC.
7.Community Information (COM)
Contains the community information necessary for operating networks.
(E-mail address, reference, administrative contact)
In the 7 types above, from 1 through 4 are the information of
organizations assigned a domain name and IP address(es) by JPNIC.
From 5 through 7 are the information necessary for contacting between
network organizations who belong to the JPNIC. The formats of these
information are open to public as "JPNIC registration form". If you
would like to get information about these formats, please send an
empty E-mail to info@db.nic.ad.jp.
How to use WHOIS
Organizations participating in Internet via IP connectivity can
retrieve JPNIC database directly. In that case please execute the
UNIX "whois" command.
% whois -h whois.nic.ad.jp KEYWORD
Please specify the string that needs to be searched in KEYWORD.
As a retrieval condition you can choose between two forms, with or
without TYPE information as follows:
*ex.1: retrieve "nic" from all of information
whois -h whois.nic.ad.jp nic
*ex.2: retrieve "nic" from DOM information only
whois -h whois.nic.ad.jp 'DOM nic'
If you would like to get a detailed usage of the retrieval conditions,
please enter "help" as a keyword(Figure 1). On whois commands, the
keywords need to be described as one queue with characters. So if
you retrieve with TYPE, it is necessary to be in " ' " (single
quotation marks). And if you wouldn't like to output them in Japanese,
add "/e" at the end of the keyword.
On a machine that doesn't have whois command, execute telnet via
whois(43/tcp) protocol instead as follows, and then you can retrieve
equal information.

Output from WHOIS
When the retrieval result via JPNIC database with a keyword becomes
more than two cases, you will get a output like figure 2. In that
case you retrieve it once more using the information described on
the right side(such as BOARD). Then you can narrow down the
information to one.
Like this, if the retrieval result with a keyword matches only
single entry, WHOIS generates its full content directly(Figure 3).
Searching by using the E-mail
If your organization doesn't participate in Internet via IP
connectivity but can use E-mail, you can retrieve JPNIC database
via a function of a mail-server JPNIC prepared. If you use it,
describe in the body of E-mail as follows:
whois keyword
end
And send it to mail-server@nic.ad.jp.
On a mail-server, if you enter a TYPE information, describe 2 queues
of characters next to each other (you needn't use single quotation
marks). The retrieval result of whois will be sended to the sender
automatically. At that time, please take care not to describe
anything such as a signature or a request except substances of
commands on a place of command lines because E-mails sended to
mail-server@nic.ad.jp are transacted mechanically.
Use via Gopher Pilot Operation System
The retrieval of JPNIC database via WHOIS is realized in these two
ways. And now JPNIC begins pilot operations of Gopher server on
gopher.nic.ad.jp. In future the menu composition and others may be
changed, but at present it is seted up to select Japan whois menu
from WHOIS menu in TOP menu of Gopher server, and then WHOIS
retrieving JPNIC database can be loaded.
Condition of WHOIS Services' Use
JPNIC started pilot WHOIS services using nic.ad.jp as the server at
the beginning. After that, from September 1, 1993 operated it
abreast with whois.nic.ad.jp, and further from the night on February
13, 1994 unified it to whois.nic.ad.jp.
The use conditions of each servers are showed up to table1-2. From
not only Japan but also overseas it is obtained access frequently,
so it bears important parts that are indispensable to operate network
smoothly.
In Conclusion
JPNIC promotes adjustments of services such as WHOIS to help you
obtain network informations from any side. If you have any openions

STRING Broad search all over the types
!STRING Key search all over the types
To restrict the search to a certain type of information:
TYPE STRING TYPE is one of DOM, NET, etc. (see above)
To obtain detail or related information:
*STRING Expand the output even when multiple matches
%STRING Expand the contact fileds or known sub-domains
^STRING Display what refers to the information
When you don't know exactly:
STRING... Partial search starting with STRING
...STRING Partial search ending with STRING
if STRING contains an '@', search only E-Mail fields:
name@ Find everyone with the name.
@domain Find everyone in the domain.
name@domain Find everyone with the name in the domain.
3. Use of the information you get from JPNIC WHOIS is limited to
ONLY for network operations.
