This is a translation of a JPNIC document. JPNIC provides this
translation for convenience of those who can not read Japanese. But it
may contain mis-translations, and is by no means official. One should
consult the source document written in Japanese for detail.

Sharing WHOIS Database Information
Sharing Information among the NICs
JPNIC (Japan Network Information Center) conducts the assignment of IP
addresses in the JP domain (those addresses that end with ".jp") and
other IP Addresses used in Japan, independently from other network
organizations. Network information derived from this process are
gathered and open to the public as the "JPNIC database".
The JPNIC database holds data on domains, networks, personal
information, host information, project information, NOC information,
and community information. Once registered, information on the JPNIC
database can be searched by using the "whois" command.
The InterNIC has also provided services as in the above by using
"whois". However, the explosive growth in the number of networks has
rapidly increased the amount of information that should be registered.
JPNIC has been authorized to conduct the assignment of addresses from
the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), via InterNIC and
APNIC. This signifies that the assignment of addresses are dispersed,
and are being done independently in each region.
Dispersion has been talked about concerning the construction of the
database and whois service, and the development of the Rwhois
(Referral Whois) has started to solve this. Since it is not effective
if the databases are dispersed and just dotted, a name server for
looking up where to find a particular information is also needed.
Needless to say, correspondence to Japanese is compulsory. In the
new RWhois, correspondence to several languages is being examined by
making a special field as in the MIME header. Same goes for the URLs
(WWW). However, RWHois is still in development, and some more time
is required before it comes worthwhile for use.
Not only the address assignment, but also the function of the NIC
itself is being dispersed. The NIC is made up of InterNIC, which
acts as a Global Registry; RIPE NCC and APNIC are Regional Registries.
Furthermore, there are National Registries and Local Registries.
In these NICs, the information being stored on these databases are
increasing, and are renewed every night and day. Information sharing
among the NICs is an important agenda until the RWhois comes to
practical use.
The SWIP (The Shared Whois Project) format is being used to share
information among the NICs.
The SWIP Format
The JPNIC has a "JPNIC registration form" (Figure 1-a). By applying
this form, the information filled in will be registered in the JPNIC
database, enabling search by using the "whois" command. By sending
E-mail to info@db.nic.ad.jp, information on filling the application
form will be automatically resent.
The SWIP format (Figure 1-b) is used to register information on the
InterNIC database, in the same fashion as registering information to
JPNIC. However, the SWIP format is only used for registering
information that have already been assigned (by such places as JPNIC).
Addresses that are assigned by the InterNIC are registered in the
same manner as in the past. Therefore, the objective of using the
SWIP format is to standardize and manage the information that have
been registered to the entrusted NICs.
Since the SWIP format is a format used among the NICs, many people
might not feel it as being something closely related to themselves.
However, data in the SWIP format is generated from the JPNIC database.
Therefore, one must be aware to apply the appropriate, accurate
information to the JPNIC database. Please make sure to fill in all
the necessary information in the JPNIC application form before sending
it. Much has been discussed on how addresses in English should be
filled, since these formats vary; this is a topic that is yet to be
discussed upon. In any case, we advise all applicants to read the
up-to-date documents before applying/renewing the database.
The JPNIC is and has been preparing various services so people can
obtain various network information from numerous environments. If
there are any questions/opinions/suggestions concerning these
information services, please send mail to:
goiken@nic.ad.jp or
suggestion@nic.ad.jp
