From JPNIC

Dear Readers,

In Special Article 1, we give you an overview of Internet Week 2023, which was held from November 15 (Wed.) to 22 (Wed.), 2023. Internet Week is an event where people involved in the research and development, construction, operation, and services of Internet-related technologies gather to learn, discuss, and deepen their understanding and exchange of basic knowledge and the latest trends in infrastructure technologies for the Internet and related fields. Its theme was "Gather around! Do Internetworking!" 2023 was a year of reunions and new encounters in real life post-COVID, so the program was organized around the concept of "Let's get together, listen, and talk". There is a lot of value to be created by knowing the overall trends of the Internet and networking with many different things. There were so many participants in both Online Week and Conference Week, and they appeared to enjoy meeting each other in person.

Many international conferences, including Internet-related conferences, were held in Japan in 2023. Internet Governance Forum Kyoto 2023 (IGF2023), the first IGF conference in Japan, was held in Kyoto from October 8 to 12, 2023, and JPNIC provided comprehensive support for this conference. In Special Article 2, we provide an overview of IGF2023, which welcomed the largest number of participants in IGF history.

In Prologue to the Internet: Its Technologies and Services, the robot JP_29 II and Dr. Hajime Koto Jr. of the Internet Research Institute explain the development of remote access. Remote work and online meetings have become commonplace, triggered by the outbreak of COVID-19, and this is made possible by remote access technologies. Now, let's take a look at how remote access technologies have developed over the years.

In Pick Out!, we introduce featured articles from the JPNIC blog. This time, we feature a photo report of IGF2023, the largest IGF in history with 6,300 participants, 355 sessions in total, and the highest number of Japanese speakers ever. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida gave a speech at the opening ceremony and also spoke at the high-level meeting, mentioning the Hiroshima AI process, an outcome of the G7 Hiroshima Summit held in May 2023, and demonstrating the proactive approach of the Japanese government. Introducing JPNIC Members focuses on a particular JPNIC member engaged in interesting activities. This time, we visited Kintetsu Cable Network Co., Ltd., headquartered in Ikoma City, Nara Prefecture. The company is a long-standing member of the industry: it was founded in 1984 and has been providing leased telecommunication line services since 1995 and Internet services since 1996. As stated in its corporate philosophy, "Key-Station for Community Needs," the company approaches its work with a strong sense of duty to contribute to the community by supporting local infrastructure. We were very impressed by the fact that despite its rock-solid foundation as a Kintetsu Group company, it is very open-minded. It has always welcomed change and likes to try out new things, and is striving to improve organizational growth and customer satisfaction by anticipating new technology and conducting thorough employee training.

The Internet Loves You is a corner in which we introduce a person who is active in the Internet industry. This time, we introduce Mr. Katsuya Shima, who works for Cisco Systems G.K. He has been familiar with the Internet since he was a child, and now organizes Internet events that attract more than 150 people. Here he talks about his experiences, his work, his activities in the Internet community, his hobbies, and much more. It is clear that he is devoted to many fields and is loved by his friends and colleagues.

According to preliminary information from the National Police Agency as of November 2023, annual financial damage from fraudulent money transfers was at its highest ever. Although many of the attacks have used methods that are by no means new, such as phishing, people continue to fall victim to fraudulent money transfers as criminals are deeply familiar with psychological tactics. In our 10 Minute Internet Course, we explore the specific types of attacks and risk mitigation measures that both users and companies (financial institutions, etc.) can take against fraudulent money transfers.
