Dear Readers,
In Special Article 1, we introduce Internet Week 2025, which will be held in November. The event's theme, “Challenge × Experience × Generation — Beyond the Uncertainty with Full Stack,” reflects a spirit of learning and collaboration across generations and disciplines. This hybrid event — online in the first half and in person during the second — serves as a valuable opportunity for engineers, researchers, and business professionals to come together and explore the latest trends in the Internet industry.
Special Article 2 covers the Internet Governance Forum 2025 (IGF 2025), held in June in Lillestrøm, Norway. Marking the 20th anniversary of the IGF, the forum featured international discussions on digital inclusion, AI governance, and building a trustworthy Internet infrastructure.
In “Talking with JPNIC Members” which introduces JPNIC members, we feature ASJ Corporation, headquartered in Saitama Prefecture. The company is celebrating its 42nd year since its establishment in February 1984. Starting from factory automation-related business, ASJ entered the Internet industry relatively early with rental server services in April 1996. Through information gathering in the United States, the company identified changing times and has developed services suited to each era, based on its own operated server centers. ASJ has boldly ventured into niche fields that other companies hesitate to enter, such as certification exam management systems for chambers of commerce and industry, and HRTech services, expanding its business with the spirit that “it's better to try and have no regrets than to regret not trying.” Currently, with cloud integration services and EC services as its two main pillars, the company has grown to employ approximately 170 people across the group. President Aoki's words, “the Internet represents limitless possibilities” and “I want to become a company that can contribute to Japan,” left a profound impression.
In Prologue to the Internet, we look back at the evolution of hosting from its emergence in the mid-1990s to the present. The article traces the transition from shared servers to dedicated servers and further to VPS and cloud hosting, explaining the technological advancements and changes in usage that shaped this evolution.
Pick Out! highlights a featured article from the JPNIC Blog. This issue introduces a report on APIGA 2025, held in August in Busan, South Korea. The residential-style program, aimed at participants aged 35 and under, provided a hands-on learning experience covering the fundamentals of Internet governance, IGF workshop proposal exercises, and mock ICANN conferences. The Internet Loves You is a column that spotlights people who are active in the Internet community. This time, we feature Mr. Takehiro Yoshihama, the Program Committee Chair of Internet Week 2025. Working as an infrastructure and security engineer at GREE since 2016, he has long contributed to Internet Week as a committee member. As chair, he expressed his desire to “bring more young people into the community and make Internet Week an entry point for them to engage with the Internet.”
In our 10 Minute Internet Course, we continue our exploration of RPKI (Resource Public Key Infrastructure) with the second installment. The article explains practical verification procedures using ROA, introduces emerging ASPA technology for validating route legitimacy, and covers operational aspects such as key management, incident cases, and the current state of RPKI deployment in Japan and abroad.
